I Have The Right by Reza Dalvand

Publication Date: 8 June 2023

The Blurb

A stunningly illustrated and essential volume on children’s rights: an introduction for kids and a reminder for adults.

I have the right to have a name and a nationality.

I have the right to the best healthcare.

I have the right to an education.

I have the right to a home where I can thrive.

With poetic text and exceptional art, internationally acclaimed Iranan illustrator Reza Dalvand introduces children to the universal rights they are entitled to under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Adopted in 1989 and ratified by 140 countries, the convention promises to defend the rights of children and to keep them safe, respected, and valued. Dalvand’s stunning illustrations speak to children all around the world, some of whose rights are often challenged and must be protected every day.

The afterword, by renowned pediatrician Dr Catherine Gueguen, links these rights to the fundamental building blocks of a stable, safe, and fulfilling life.

The Review

From the moment you open the cover and see the stunning end papers featuring a multitude of languages, you know you are about to embark on a special journey. I Have The Right takes us on a global journey told through the voices of the children we meet exploring the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The stark simple text is brought to life through Reza’s stunning, bold illustrations in which every child will be able to find their mirror.

Food, education, safety and shelter, and the right not to be discriminated against for any reason all feature, making this a fantastic book to spark discussion around lived experiences in different cultures and countries, making it a perfect read for empathy. This page in particular brings home that not every child gets to live in a country where the rights of the child are respected or maintained.

This is a book that deserves a place in every school so that children know what environment they are entitled to grow up in both at home and in the wider community, so that they can reach their full potential.

Huge thanks to Liz and Scribble Kids Books for sending me a copy and inviting me to take part in the blog tour. Do make sure you check out all of the stops.
