The Review
A heart-warming adventure that beautifully captures the essence of the unbreakable bond between a dog and his human. Set against the backdrop of a fictional world fraught with conflict, this story explores themes of loyalty, bravery, and the lengths to which love will go to protect its own.
Rebel is a dog who revels in the simplicity and perfection of life on a farm with his owner, Tom. Ross perfectly captures the idyllic rural setting, where the bond between Tom and Rebel is as natural and nurturing as the land they inhabit. Rebel’s thoughts and feelings are portrayed with such depth and empathy that readers can’t help but root for him. His love for Tom is pure and unconditional, a stark contrast to the human conflicts surrounding them, and his voice offers a unique viewpoint that is both innocent and profoundly wise, grounded in his primal instincts to protect and love.
The fictional setting is reminiscent of historical periods of rebellion and strife, and is filled with vivid pictures of the various landscapes Rebel traverses in his quest, from the tranquil farmlands to the market towns and mountains along the way to the High Castle. His encounters with other characters, both human and animal, add layers to the story, each interaction bringing out different characteristics of his personality and resolve, and adding to the understanding of the political landscape that draws him ever closer to the impending war. I adored his innocent enthusiasm in the face of Jaxon’s world weary crabbiness. Each trial they face together forge ever stronger bonds to each other, with both wanting the other to live the life they love and deserve.
I Am Rebel is a touching, compelling read that will appeal to animal lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. Its poignant portrayal of a dog’s devotion in the face of human conflict offers a refreshing perspective on themes of war and loyalty. It is a testament to the strength of love and the enduring bonds that tie us together, no matter the obstacles. Rebel’s journey is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and love can light the way home.
Proof That Reading Changes Lives
We said goodbye to our very old springer spaniel recently, and our home has felt very quiet and empty since. I had said that I wouldn’t get another dog, but as I sat reading I Am Rebel, I missed the comforting presence that comes from having a dog curled up nearby. I decided I wasn’t going to google dogs for adoption, and then spent a few hours doing just that. My partner and I both saw a cocker spaniel who needed a forever home, and now I’m delighted to say that Rocco Montgomery Cleveland is a wonderful addition to our family – proof (if ever it was needed) that reading really does change lives!

Huge thanks to Walker Books for sending me an early proof copy.
