The Review
Books like this are the reason I can’t read in bed because I’d be up all night. Fast-paced, bursting with imagination, and begs you to read just one more chapter. If you haven’t read the first two books, stop reading this and treat yourself to the fantastical adventures and beastly battles we’ve already been treated to.
Just when Bitsy and Kosh thought they had a handle on the world of magicores, science and magic collide in the most disastrous way possible in this spectacular, globe-trotting adventure.
I loved the emotional core of this story. Seeing Bitsy and Kosh forced to confront their deepest internal fears while simultaneously battling external monsters adds a lovely layer of depth to the non-stop action.
Jennifer continues to be an absolute master at weaving scientific and emotional details into her fantasy world. It never feels like a lecture; instead, the visceral biology and physics of the magicores make the magic feel grounded and tactile, yet completely spectacular. The world-building remains exquisite, making the shift from the Galápagos to Borneo feel like a genuine global expedition.
The creatures themselves are, of course, the stars of the show. They are inventive, occasionally terrifying, and consistently incredible, providing a perfect sense of wonder for readers of all ages.
And, yet again, children leave the book with a more nuanced understanding of emotions, and the situations that can create them.
Great for fans of:
- Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by A.F. Steadman
- Paper Dragons by Siobhan McDermott
- Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston
