The Review

BOSH! Full of epic adventures, big laughs, and endearing characters that leave a lasting impression, Oh What A Knight! brings the adventures of the Gods Squad to a highly optimal conclusion, while still leaving you wishing for more adventures with the beloved characters.

Vesper and Aster have grown so much since we first met them in Oh Maya Gods! They have embraced and encouraged the best of themselves and each other through every trial, but in Oh What A Knight, we see them face their biggest challenge that threatens to drive them apart. It’s a joy to see flawed heroes that are completely different to each other: Vesper with her whip-smart tongue and confidence, and Aster with his thoughtful, empathic steadying hand.

The Arthurian characters are vividly brought to life through witty dialogue and comical situations, where Aster discovers that not everything we read about our heroes is true. Arthur, now elderly but still noble and determined, is rejuvenated by the prospect of action. Maz’s hilarious twists on the Arthurian world had me crying with laughter, as the legendary figures snapped to attention, ready to embark on a new quest.

From Glastonbury Tor to Camelot, and Glastonbury Festival to Stonehenge, this one felt very special as we explored the mythology from our own shores. I also loved meeting the plethora of daemons from the whole world of mythology desperate to be the daemon to bring the world to an end once and for all – I found myself, strangely, rooting for Thanatos (some of the time).

Fans of Maz will delight in cleverly placed name drops to characters you may have met elsewhere, and the children’s book world will, I’m sure, be eagerly awaiting Sir Lancelot’s next move…

If, like me, you are bereft at the thought of no new adventures with the family behind the front door of Home Farm, just keep telling yourself, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened…” And then vow to read Who Let The Gods Out to your UKS2 class so you can relive the adventure from the very beginning. Again.

And, if you want to discover more about the different mythologies we meet along the way in the Gods Squad books, try Myth Atlas by Thiago de Moraes, and An Atlas Of Afterlives by Emily Hawkins.
