The Blurb

What Do Lions, Tigers, and Panthers Get up to All Day?

Set over a 24-hour period, meet sparring snow leopards, sprinting cheetahs, and slumbering jaguars in this kids’ non-fiction book about the biggest cats on Earth.

Follow the lives of individual big cats as they roar, hunt, fight, and play their way through the day. Wildlife expert Tyus D. Williams cleverly weaves the story from leopard to mountain lion in the style of a nature documentary, including gentle science explanations perfect for future zoologists. Witness incredible moments including:

  • A panther hunting a crocodile
  • Cheetah cubs play fighting
  • A battle between lionesses and hyenas

The Review

Bursting with facts that adorn stunningly illustrated double page spreads, Big Cats, take us around the globe through a day in the life of these magnificent creatures. Starting off with a page explaining the branches of the Felidae family, we see how not all big cats are as closely related to each other as we might think.

Tyus brings a nature documentary style narrative to the book as it switches cats and continents, describing the similarities and differences in their lives based on their habitats and the animals they share them with. He makes technical vocabulary accessible in to younger readers, and a glossary at the back helps with this further. I loved the extra facts on each spread, and asides as to what might be happening with a different cat across the globe.

Spreads on how big cats have evolved to hunt, and how they have adapted to camouflage in their habitats and (my favourite) where to find them in the wild, are interspersed with the hourly double page spreads.

Perfect for LKS2 and up, this is a must for any classes looking at predators and a superb read for pleasure that will see children dipping in time and again to spot extra details in the illustrations and revel in the amazing facts.
